We often think that some things are immutable, they are part of the landscape and it will never change, when all of a sudden, destiny knocks on our door and reminds us that everything can disappear.
This Monday, April 15, shortly before 7 pm, white smoke escapes from the roof of Notre-Dame cathedral, then flames began to emerge. It is the incomprehension, the shock, the amazement that seize the Parisians then the whole world.
Is it true? How is it possible? Will the cathedral burn completely? So many questions that we all asked ourselves during these long hours when firefighters of Paris battled against the spread of the fire.
The emotion is intense and very quickly, the Parisians go to the bedside of Notre-Dame to commune each in their own way, believers as atheists for this cathedral, which beyond a place of worship, has become a cherished icon in the hearts of Parisians, French, Europeans and even humanity. She went through the centuries; seen past kings, emperors, presidents; she came back to life thanks to Victor Hugo and was spared by the two world wars. It is an important part of our cultural heritage and we cannot accept its demise.
After the desolation, came the relief, the fire is circumscribed, the belfry is saved, Notre-Dame still stands up. We can finally give way to hope.
It is now the question of refurbishment that arises. After an expertise that will allow us to quantify the extent of the damage, we will have to decide how to restore and estimate the cost. But the generosity does not wait and the promises of donation are fused: individuals as well as private ones immediately mobilized themselves.
And like the phoenix, Notre-Dame will be reborn from its ashes.
